Seeking Health, Finding Vegan

Here I am, weeks after a trip to a dairy farm in Vermont, still saddened by what I saw. A year ago, I probably couldn't even tell you where the dairy I was eating came from, let alone feel sad for a cow. Like many other people, I had VERY little knowledge of where my food came from. This all changed one day, and it has been the most educational and wonderful journey of my life! My desire to be healthy was just a tiny path leading me towards a much bigger road ahead!

I was looking to change my diet because I wanted to be healthier! I had no idea where that would lead, I just knew there was a lifestyle out there better than the one I was living. After studying fitness and a little bit of nutrition, I still felt like I was missing something. And then everything started to fall into place. A book recommendation, a documentary, and a few Youtube videos, all brought me to where I am today...sad for the dairy cow.

I had no intention of becoming one of 'those' people...you know, those who fight for animal rights, those who despise factory farming, those who don't eat any animal products, those who don't want to see the planet get destroyed...but here I am. Checking food labels for vegan friendly ingredients, excited to see food actually labeled as vegan, watching food & animal rights documentaries, constantly reading and educating myself, and wanting to make a difference! I wanted to be part of this movement!

Though many people just can't wrap their heads around being vegan, it really is such a beautiful (and simple) lifestyle. I have discovered that traditions are meant to evolve, and ethnic dishes can be tweaked, and holidays won't be ruined. The best part is I am not contributing to the mass killings of animals, I am eating the healthiest food on the planet, and I am helping the environment! Yes, not consuming animals products is the BEST way to help the environment...who knew ;)

So, as my health improved, so did my knowledge. They say when you really open your eyes you will never go back. Once you stop following your tainted tongue, you will discover the foods which hold the most flavor (and health benefits) are actually plants! Plant foods offer us numerous health benefits, they keep us energized, keep our digestive system moving, protect us from illness & disease, and keep us hydrated! Not to mention they help keep your weight down and your body lean! What else do we need?!?!?

Even though I am still learning and the process can be heart breaking & sad, I know I am doing the right thing. With one simple choice, I am not just looking out for myself, but also for the animals, and the planet...and that feeling is incredible! My search for health has really been so much more, it has been a life changing journey and for that I am so grateful!

Sometimes a tiny path is just part of the big road ahead...a road much bigger than you ever imagined!
